That's the way it is. You can only hear two channels with digital input, when you are not watching Doby Digital & DTS source.
5.1 in digital will only works when there are digital signals decoding from movies or digital audio like ape.
( You can only hear two channels because your source
file is two channel like most wave, mp3 files. )
Analog input is a different story. It just mimics 5.1 channels and separate the sound into those speakers.
( It resamples two channels sounds into a fake 5.1 sound like most of the amplifier recreate the surround effect. )
So, You can only hear true 5.1 digital sound by playing movies with AC3, DD or DTS decode.
However, you can turn on the surround sound if your speakers has a surround feature or
using ac3filter to resample the two channels 's movie into a fake 5.1 surround movie.
